Part 4: Hushed Truth About Lyme Disease, A Lyme Disease Recovery Story Continued
81$100 Dollar Reward for 'Henry'.
Light at the End of the Tunnel!
If you've read my previous articles Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, then you know I've been fighting the good fight of Faith against the dreaded tick-borne disease called Lyme. I started intense antibiotic treatment July 7, 2010. I've been keeping a video diary & writing about my journey here on Hubpages.
Now, over seven weeks into treatment, I finally see the light! Wow! What a relief. It's been a long ride, but I can see the finish line in the distance. I'm now officially 70% improved with my fatigue. It's amazing. I can jog to the mailbox, play with my grandson, & complete my strength training without becoming exhausted. This is a total turn-around from 4 weeks ago. I'm very thankful to be getting my life back.
Before I get into the 'meat' of my recovery, there's something I'd like to explain concerning the testing for Lyme disease. In order for the reader to reach a full understanding about how complex & difficult the disease is, I need to briefly clarify the test results so you can have a clearer perception of the diagnosis of Lyme disease.
Here's the bumper sticker on my Mazda...

My New Test Results: Negative, but Positive!
What? My LLMD (Lyme Literate Medical Doctor) explained my test results in detail. With his guidance, combined with my own research, I was able to get a better idea of why the testing cannot be relied on for accuracy.
The best test is the Western Blot. Tests for borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme) aren't even close to accurate! That's why all LLMD's send their test results to a Lyme specialty lab, Igenex. Igenex lab tests for more antibody bands than the standard labs used by most of the medical community. But with all these factors in place, according to Igenex, "Unfortunately, not all Lyme patients have similar immune systems: only approximately 70% of those with Lyme disease generate a strong enough antibody response to appear on a western blot. "
My original test for Lyme came back an actual negative, but positive for one band of the antibody. My new test from Igenex told a different story. Although showing "Negative", I was positive for many more bands. As follows:
Lyme IgM Western Blot.
**34 kDa. - IND (means Indeterminate. Band present with intensity > weak).
**41 kDa. - + (Positive).
In order to be considered an actual positive for this section of the test, 2 or more bands must be positive. In other words, it's a weak positive...the other band was there, but was weak in intensity. My doctor suggested it may be because I'm in the early stages of the disease (thank God!).
Lyme IgG Western Blot.
**31 kDa. - IND (means Indeterminate. Band present with intensity >weak).
**41 kDa. - + (Positive)
Unstarred bands 45 & 58 kDa. were + (Positive).
In this section, 3 postives & 1 inderterminate. To be considered actual postive, I would need 5 positive bands.
Again, the IND result on a test means the antibody is there, just weak in intensity. Igenex states on their lab results the following: "......INDETERMINATE DOUBLE STARRED BANDS IN A NEGATIVE REPORT MAY INDICATE CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE." The most significant statement on the test is at the bottom: " Diagnosis should not be based on laboratory tests alone. "Results should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical symptoms and patient history. "
In other words, Lyme is a clinical diagnosis. Based on my symptoms & history, I have Lyme. But do I really have Lyme? It's possible I don't have it but probable I DO have it!
Spirituality Plays the Key Role
Learning to release & give this thing over to God has been the main factor in this fight, so far. Without that, I'd be back to square one. Now I know a lot of folks out there may not believe in God, as I know him, but He's been the rock of my foundation from the beginning. This is not a sermon, this is a testimony. Regardless, applying my Faith first in this struggle has been the glue that's held me together.
August 13 Video Diary: Over 5 weeks into treatment.
Three Weeks Medical Leave from Work.
I had to do something. I was exhausted at the end of every day. My anxiety level was through the roof & I was having difficulty concentrating. So I had to take a 3 week medical leave from work. I know I made the right decision, though I had to use all my Paid Time Off & Sick days. I knew it was time. Getting plenty of rest is essential to recovery; and I wasn't sleeping much. As each day passed, my energy slowly returned.
Here's an example of how the spine affects every part of the body!
Intense Chiropractic Care!
Boy, oh boy. That's when the energy came back. I found an amazing program of chiropractic care called Maximized Living. I walked into the office the first day, foggy-brained, exhausted, confused, & anxious thinking I'd be going into a traditional doctor's office. NOT! What I found that day was a room full of positive, uplifting staff members who greeted the patients with a hug, smile, & pat on the back. There was an honest sense of compassion & care present, along with much positive reinforcement.
I got my first treatment that day, and I must say, no doctor has EVER moved my neck the way that this one did. The top bone in my spine, I forgot the name of it, was pushing against my brain stem. When he pulled my neck into place it felt like a rush.....of something. I was quite jarred. I continued my treatments 3 times per week. After about the 5th treatment, I started noticing my energy level rising. It has steadily gotten better, week after week.
Correcting the alignment in my spine has enabled my whole body to heal. It's like God gave us this body that is perfectly capable of healing itself without interference. When the spine is out of line, crooked, or damaged by trauma, or when we pollute our bodies with things is doesn't recognize it causes a malfunction. Being that the spine affects our WHOLE central nervous system, it became clear to me that maintaining balance within my whole body was going to set me on the right path. It was a good choice.
Uncover the Epidemic..........
Order the DVD "Under Our Skin" here to learn the shocking truth!
- Under our Skin | An Infectious New Film
Open Eye Pictures: Under Our Skin. A Dramatic Tale Of Microbes, Medicine and Money, this eye-opening film investigates the untold story of Lyme disease, an emerging epidemic larger than AIDS.
Now What?
So here I am.....well over 5 weeks of treatment & still not completely cured. Remember, the IDSA (Infectious Diseases Society of America) says Lyme can be cured easily in 4 weeks. Oh, really? If that's the case, why do I still have symptoms? Why are my elbows & arms constantly hurting? Why do I continually switch letters around while typing & writing? I never did this before I was bitten by that disease-infested tick in the mountains of Arkansas.
I wish I had the answers. The controversy will continue until the volcano finally erupts. I would advise anyone who wants to know more about the Controversy, to view the film "Under Our Skin". It will shock & amaze you.
Hopefully, there will only be one more installment in this series of "The Hushed Truth About Lyme Disease". I will totally recover.

I am so sorry you are suffering like this. I used to work for a neurologist and saw so many patients with this disease. Damn those ticks!
Hi - So happy for the positive change in status for you. I'm fascinated with the chiro part. And, of course, your faith is central. Keep doing what you're doing. Best wishes!!
Thanks for keeping us updated! We have all been worried about you. Am so glad to hear the worst is passed and that you are finally on the mend :)
I find this article just awesome. I hope you can recover completely soon.
Very interesting spine picture. I do a chi-kung spine alignment exercise. I focus on three points in my spine. 1 point at hight of the kidneys. 2 point at heart. 3 point at base of the skull. The exercise is to intent them upwards. It was developed to create more space between the discs and to maintain healthy alignment. I do this exercise throughout the whole day, even when I pick up something or sit down. It's more of a awareness that one creates. I just thought about this while reading your story.

Great info and hub
So glad to know you're getting better.
You Go Girl...it was wonderful speaking with you over the phone recently and finding out how much better you're feeling! Thank goodness you took control of this and didn't let it beat you! Congrats...I knew you had the courage to fight the good fight and come out on top!
And I'm sure many will agree with me when I say.. thank you for helping to promote awareness to the effects of Lyme Disease, we're all grateful that you do.
Thanks for the update and wishing you a speedy recovery.
donotfear, I'm following along and voted up, useful, awesomely beautiful, that you have taken the time and commitment to help others through your experience. May God Bless you dearly in your journey, 50
We have always used chiropractic care to help us with any of our aches and pains and gotten great results. You will beat this disease. I can just tell. But it sits in remission in our blood... I am so happy to see the improvement you had over your last hub. God Bless. ( I just read these two together - I'm late .) Fifteen years back my lyme specialist doctor gave IV lines to some of his very serious patients and the insurance companies were fighting him then. He put my disease in remission and I'm so glad I searched to find him, too. YOU will beat this thing. Take care.
I have been following your videos and your hubs as you have undertaken this journey and I am so very happy that at last things seem to be turning around for you.
It is so unfair that you have to battle not only against this dreadful disease but also against the ignorance of Doctors who often appear to be saying either you have not got Lyme or that it is all in your head.
Through following your story I have also been following a young woman going through the same battles but she does not seem to have met with as much success as you have.
Her name is Cassandra and this is her first video diary on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzY2hqtcvEk
The financial implications of this awful disease is unbelievable, at one point treatment for Cassandra had to be stopped not because it was not doing anything but because they did not have the money for the next round of what is very expensive treatment.
I find it very hard to understand the American concept of sick days, if you are too sick to work surely you are too sick for work. What happens when your illness exceeds the number of sick days you are allowed?
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the illness was only allowed to exist for the number of sick days that you had left?
I pray that your healing is soon complete and that you not only return to full health but that you return to a place where you feel even better than you did before you contracted this dreadful disease.
May God wonderfully bless you and your family.
I'm glad you are starting to feel so much better. It sounds like you are doing everything you can to beat it. I'll keep praying for you, and everyone else who is battling Lyme.
Hi dear friend~
I am glad to hear you are doing better~ Prayers are going out for you to beat this horrible disease...
Damn those little ticks!!!
hugs
Art
Hi there,
Glad to hear things are looking uo for you. if you are anything like me a near death experance changes ones life.
Be blessed
God Bless you for creating this journal for everyone. I've been suffering from CLD since being bit by a tick when I was 4 years old, 30 years ago. Neither I nor my family were educated back then to know the steps to take towards treatment (neither did the Drs) so I never did get treatment, but toughed it out. It's crippling though. I am looking into a LLMD now, hopefully I can find one in or near the Midwest.
As for ticks in Arkansas, would you believe my tick came from Arkansas to bite me in Illinois?? A neighbor kid came back from his family's place in Arkansas, with a jar full of creatures. The tick bite came during our play time together and him showing me this jar of insects, unfortunately. If only my mom wanted me to stay in that day....
Thank you. Just found you. Have been sick for 4 months. Flu like, pink eye, won't go away, fatigue, anxiety attacks, sore throat, you name it...burning pains in legs, hips and especially wrists, hands, arms and shoulders. Had test. Just found out negative. Was bumbed. Just wanted to know what it was and how to pray. Well your words encouraged me. I'm on antibiotics and will continue for the month. Already seeing progress in pink eye area. I'm going to fight this with God's h elp and I do have a great chiropractor. On the way to see him shortly. Thanks for the words of encouragement. You will be put on my fav site.
